The publication “Bone of Contention: Marriage – Same-Sex Marriage and Church Weddings from a Reformed Perspective” was written by Luca Baschera and Frank Mathwig at the request of the Council of the Protestant Reformed Church of Switzerland (PCS). It offers a theological reflection on marriage, sexuality, and equality within the Reformed tradition.
Initially published as a discussion paper for the 2019 Assembly of Delegates, the text was later expanded and revised. It combines biblical, Reformation-era, and ethical reflections to provide an overview of the theological foundations behind different viewpoints on marriage and same-sex unions.
At the heart of the publication lies the question of how the Reformed Church can engage with social and legal changes while remaining faithful to its biblical and theological identity. The authors explore the Reformation principle of sola scriptura, analyse the biblical understanding of marriage and sexuality, and present the perspectives of Luther, Zwingli, Bullinger, and Calvin.
The text also addresses current theological arguments for and against same-sex marriage, considering the implications for blessings and church weddings. Issues such as freedom of conscience, protection against discrimination, and the ecumenical dimensions of Reformed marriage theology are also discussed.
Rather than arguing for one position, the publication seeks to foster constructive dialogue between differing theological views. It is aimed at readers who wish to engage more deeply with the theological dimensions of contemporary discussions about marriage and family.
